Davina Flor is the daughter of Victoria Guzman, the Nasar's cook. Santiago has a sexual desire for her and grabs her in inappropriate places when he gets the chance. She never actualy gets together with Santiago because her mother is always watching very cautiously. There is not a very good relationship between Santiago and Victoria. Davina does not play a large role in the book, however she does not realize the letter put under the door telling Santiago the twins are after him. This is a crucial mistake and one may argue it was deliberate, given that she really didn' t like Santiago. She was always there in the background. She did what she was told by Santiago but as he continued to assault her sexually, she became more and more annoyed and disgraced by him. She would often help her mother with whatever needed doing. |

The meaning of Davina is "beloved" This is quite suitable as her mother is very protective over her and does not want her getting close to Santiago. She is beloved in a very informal way by Santiago as he looks to her as someone he can just tease and "get with" for fun. Flor is a name taken away mainly from the word Flora, which means "flower." Flowers represent happy things, kindness and joy. Davina is ironically none of these things to Santigao. She does not want many good things to come to him and although some may argue she has good reason, she does not fit the characteristic of someone who is "flowery." |
